In July 2025, Brazil’s Serra do Tombador Reserve recorded its first-ever sighting of a black jaguar on camera — a moment so rare, it feels like a living legend caught on film.
This isn’t a separate species, but a jaguar with a genetic variation called melanism, which turns its usual golden coat into deep black. Look closely, and you’ll still see the iconic rosette patterns subtly visible beneath the dark fur.
Only around 10% of jaguars are melanistic, making any sighting incredibly special. But despite their beauty and power, jaguars are under threat. Once ranging from the southern U.S. to Argentina, they now face habitat loss, deforestation, and poaching.
